What is Bartholin’s Cyst?

There are two Bartholin’s glands situated on each side of the vaginal opening. They secrete fluid that lubricates the vagina. Sometimes the duct of these glands becomes obstructed and fluid backs up resulting in the formation of a cyst known as a Bartholin’s Cyst.

How common is this?

About two out of 10 women can expect to get a it at some point.  They are more common in women of reproductive age and the chance of them developing decreases after menopause.

What causes Bartholin’s cyst?

Medical Experts believe that the causes of a this can be due to following reasons: –

  1. Fluid build-up in the Bartholin’s gland
  2. Bacterial infections such as E. coli
  3. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, or other sexually transmitted diseases (STIs).
  4. Injury, irritation of the vagina.

Bartholin’s Cyst Symptoms?

Many of these cysts are small and do not cause symptoms other than minor irritation. If a Bartholin Cyst forms an abscess (infection), then it could result in the following symptoms: –

  • Swelling, tenderness, and pain near the vaginal opening
  • Discomfort and pain during intercourse, while walking or sitting.
  • Fever
  • Redness
  • Drainage from the cyst

Is it contagious?

No, these are not contagious; they can’t pass from person to person through sexual contact.

How Bartholin’s Cyst is diagnosed?

A healthcare provider will do a physical examination. They will look at the size of the cyst and look for signs of infection.

Prevention of Bartholin’s Cyst
